SUMMARY:70 Years of LBI: Bridging Generations
DESCRIPTION:LBI is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a two-part exhibit\, 70 Years of LBI: Bridging Generations. The exhibit will tell the story of LBI’s founding and showcase recent LBI projects. \nThe first part of the exhibit regales viewers with the story of the Institute from its May 1955 founding conference in Jerusalem to the present day. Featuring the most important moments from the last 70 years\, the exhibit presents the events\, staff members\, scholars\, and others who shaped the present and future of the Institute–and the field of German-Jewish studies at large. The exhibit explores the unique connection between the Institute’s activities\, Germany\, and the German-speaking Jewish diaspora. It also explains how the role and the audience of the Institute have changed with the new generations of scholars and lay audiences. The exhibit utilizes materials gathered but rarely seen over the years in LBI archives. The second part of the exhibit\, “LBI at Work\,” presents recent LBI projects\, including our podcast series\, online projects\, and video interviews with scholars. \nSupported by the Charles & Madeline Dreifus Family Exhibition Fund. \nMontag\, 10. Mär. 2025 – Mittwoch\, 18. Jun. 2025 \nCenter for Jewish History\n15 W. 16th St.\nNew York\, NY 10011

SUMMARY:Magda Teter on Early Modern German-Jewish History
DESCRIPTION:Lunchtime Lecture\n  \n  \n\n\nWednesday\, 11th June 2025\n12:00–13:30 EST\nOnline\nThe event is free of admission\, ➚ get your tickets here.\n\n  \n\n\n\nPart 2 of LBI’s 70th Anniversary Lecture Series \nOn June 11 at 12:00 PM EST\, Magda Teter will discuss early modern German-Jewish history. \nAs we look back at the last 70 years of German-Jewish historiography since the founding of the Leo Baeck Institute\, LBI presents a series of seven events focusing on the most important topics in German Jewish history. Each generation of historians witnesses the appearance of different approaches to historical writing. After decades of focusing on the main political events in German-Jewish history and biographies of political leaders\, there has been a turn to microhistory\, the role of common people\, women and children\, minorities\, stories dominated by struggles and failures\, etc. In the new series\, the LBI will present a comprehensive view of seven overarching topics in German Jewish history and ask how their historiography has changed over the decades. \n\nAbout the Speaker: \n\n\nPhoto by Chuck Fishman\n\n\nMagda Teter is a Professor of History and the Shvidler Chair of Judaic Studies at Fordham University. She is the author of Jews and Heretics in Catholic Poland (2005)\, Sinners on Trial: Jews and Sacrilege after the Reformation (2011)\, Blood Libel: On the Trail of An Antisemitic Myth (2020)\, Christian Supremacy: Reckoning with the Roots of Antisemitism and Racism (2023)\, and of dozens of articles in English\, Hebrew\, Italian\, and Polish. Her essays have also appeared in the New York Review of Books\, Public Seminar\, the JTA\, and others. Her book Blood Libel won the 2020 National Jewish Book Award\, The George L. Mosse Prize from the American Historical Association\, and the Ronald Bainton Prize from the Sixteenth Century Society. Her new book\, Blood Libels\, Hostile Archives: Reclaiming Interrupted Jewish Lives was published in April 2025. SUMMARY:Book Club: The Many Lives of Anne Frank
DESCRIPTION:Author Ruth Franklin will join the LBI Book Club in June to discuss her book The Many Lives of Anne Frank. \nAbout The Many Lives of Anne Frank \n\n\nDo.\, 26. Juni 2025 \n20:00–21:30 MESZ \n\n\nOnline. The event free of admission\, ➚ get your tickets here. \n\nIn this innovative new biography\, Ruth Franklin explores the transformation of Anne Frank (1929–1945) from ordinary teenager to icon\, shedding new light on the young woman whose diary of her years in hiding\, now translated into more than seventy languages\, is the most widely read work of literature to arise from the Holocaust. \n\nComprehensively researched but experimental in spirit\, this book chronicles and interprets Anne’s life as a Jew in Amsterdam during World War II while also telling the story of the diary—its multiple drafts\, its discovery\, its reception\, and its message for today’s world. Writing alongside Anne rather than over her\, Franklin explores the day-to-day perils of the Holocaust in the Netherlands as well as Anne’s ultimate fate\, restoring her humanity and agency in all their messiness\, heroism\, and complexity. \nWith antisemitism once again in the news\, The Many Lives of Anne Frank takes a fresh and timely look at the debates around Anne’s life and work\, including the controversial adaptations of the diary\, Anne’s evolution as a fictional character\, and the ways her story and image have been politically exploited. Franklin reveals how Anne has been understood and misunderstood\, both as a person and as an idea\, and opens up new avenues for interpreting her life and writing in today’s hyperpolarized world. \nOur Guest and the Author: Ruth Franklin \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFranklin’s work appears in many publications\, including The New Yorker\, The New York Times Book Review\, The New York Review of Books\, and Harper’s. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in biography\, a Cullman Fellowship at the New York Public Library\, a Leon Levy Fellowship in biography\, and the Roger Shattuck Prize for Criticism. Her first book\, A Thousand Darknesses: Lies and Truth in Holocaust Fiction (Oxford University Press\, 2011)\, was a finalist for the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature. She lives in Brooklyn\, New York. \n\n\n\n\n\nFinding the Book: \nThe book can be ordered directly from Yale\, which has published it as part of their „Jewish Lives“ series. \nhttps://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300248128/the-many-lives-of-anne-frank/ \nYou can also find it in many library systems and other bookstores.
