SUMMARY:70 Years of LBI: Bridging Generations
DESCRIPTION:LBI is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a two-part exhibit\, 70 Years of LBI: Bridging Generations. The exhibit will tell the story of LBI’s founding and showcase recent LBI projects. \nThe first part of the exhibit regales viewers with the story of the Institute from its May 1955 founding conference in Jerusalem to the present day. Featuring the most important moments from the last 70 years\, the exhibit presents the events\, staff members\, scholars\, and others who shaped the present and future of the Institute–and the field of German-Jewish studies at large. The exhibit explores the unique connection between the Institute’s activities\, Germany\, and the German-speaking Jewish diaspora. It also explains how the role and the audience of the Institute have changed with the new generations of scholars and lay audiences. The exhibit utilizes materials gathered but rarely seen over the years in LBI archives. Diese Konferenz ist Teil des inhaltlichen Programms im Jubiläumsjahr. \n  \nAm 8. Mai 1945 endete der Zweite Weltkrieg in Europa mit der bedingungslosen Kapitulation der Wehrmacht und der Befreiung von der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft. Zwei Monate später entschieden Vertreter der drei alliierten Großmächte USA\, Großbritannien und Sowjetunion auf der Potsdamer Konferenz im Schloss Cecilienhof über die Zukunft Europas. \nErleichtert darüber\, dass nun Frieden einkehrte\, sahen sich Holocaust-Überlebende zugleich mit neuen Herausforderungen konfrontiert: Oft krank und in geschwächtem Zustand verharrten sie monate- oder gar jahrelang in Einrichtungen für Displaced Persons\, warteten entweder auf die Rückkehr in ihre Heimatländer oder hofften auf einen Neuanfang in einem anderen Land. Individuelle Orientierungs-\, Identitätsund Existenzkämpfe verknüpften sich in der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit mit extremen traumatischen Erfahrungen und einem weiterhin anhaltenden Antisemitismus. \nDie internationale Konferenz beleuchtet jüdische Perspektiven hinsichtlich existenzieller\, gesellschaftlicher\, wirtschaftlicher und intellektueller Neuanfänge im ideologisch-politisch geteilten Deutschland und Europa bis zum Bau der Mauer im Jahre 1961. \nEs werden Erfahrungswelten jüdischer Rückkehrer\, Displaced Persons und die Arbeit von Hilfsorganisationen vorgestellt sowie jüdische Identitäts- und Entscheidungsfindungen im Kontext der sich im Wandel befindenden europäischen Gesellschaften aufgezeigt\, und es wird über Fragen der Wiedergutmachung\, der Abrechnung mit Nationalsozialisten sowie der justiziellen Aufarbeitung der nationalsozialistischen Verbrechen debattiert. \nProgramm\nMittwoch\, 7. SUMMARY:VERSCHOBEN: Rethinking German Nationalism in the Interwar Period
DESCRIPTION:NEUER TERMIN FOLGT! \n  \n  \nDue to the horrors of the Third Reich\, we have come to think of German nationalism as inherently antisemitic\, racist\, antidemocratic\, and violent. This talk challenges this conventional interpretation. It shows how the defenders of the Weimar and First Austrian Republics used the großdeutsch idea\, the notion that Austria should be part of a German nation-state\, to create a democratic nationalism. Unlike their conservative and right-wing opponents\, these republicans did not view democracy and Germany\, socialism and nationalism\, or Jew and German as mutually exclusive categories. As such\, the triumph of Nazi ideas about nationalism was far from inevitable. \nErin Hochman is Associate Professor of History at Southern Methodist University. She is the author of Imagining a Greater Germany: Republican Nationalism and the Idea of Anschluss (Cornell University Press\, 2016). Her current book project examines how various political groups in the Weimar Republic used the concept of a German diaspora to support or challenge democracy\, as well as the involvement of so-called Germans abroad in Germany’s political struggles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDoes belonging always require exclusion? This lecture series explores this universal question through the lens of the German-Jewish experience\, a community deeply shaped by its complex relationship to inclusion and exclusion. Spanning key moments in modern history\, these talks examine German-Jewish thinkers’ responses to the dominant ‘Protestant ethic’\, debates over nationalism in interwar Germany and Austria\, the warped ideology of Adolf Hitler\, and the long struggle of German Jews to reclaim citizenship after the Holocaust.
