SUMMARY:LBI NY | Berlin: Closing Borders: Immigration and World War I with Tobias Brinkmann and José C. Moya
DESCRIPTION:The rise of the United States and Israel as centers of Jewish life is closely tied to immigration. Yet the success story of Jewish immigration obscures the experiences of hundreds of thousands of Jews from Eastern Europe who were displaced during and after the First World War. Wherever they turned they faced closed doors. The United States shifted to a restrictive immigration regime in 1921\, implicitly targeting Eastern European Jews. Most other countries also restricted immigration. Many Jews who were stranded in permanent transit after 1918 perished in the Holocaust because they could not reach safe havens. \nIn his new book „Between Borders: The Great Jewish Migration from Eastern Europe“ Tobias Brinkmann (Penn State Univ.) sheds light on the journeys of Jewish migrants and refugees before and after the First World War. He argues that the experience of permanently displaced Jews after 1918 deserves more attention and shows parallels to the situation of unwanted refugees and migrants today. \nFor this event Tobias Brinkmann will be joined by José C. Moya (Barnard College/Columbia University)\, a leading specialist of modern Latina America and global migration. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers: \n \n\n\nTobias Brinkmann is the Malvin and Lea Bank Associate Professor of Jewish Studies and History at Penn State University\, University Park\, PA and Director of the Jewish Studies program. Publications: Between Borders: The Great Jewish Migration from Eastern Europe (Oxford University Press\, 2024). Sundays at Sinai: A Jewish Congregation in Chicago (University of Chicago Press\, 2012) – finalist for the National Jewish Book Award 2013; (Editor)\, Points of Passage: Jewish Transmigrants from Eastern Europe in Scandinavia\, Germany\, and Britain 1880-1914 (New York: Berghahn\, 2013). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJosé C. Moya directs the Forum on Migration at Barnard and the Institute of Latin American Studies at Columbia\, and teaches courses on global migration\, Latin American history\, the Jewish immigrant experience\, and anarchism. Professor Moya has authored more than fifty publications\, including Cousins and Strangers: Spanish Immigrants in Buenos Aires\, a book that received five awards and was the subject of a special forum in the journal Historical Methods for its contributions to migration studies;  World Migration in the Long Twentieth Century\, co-authored with Adam McKeown; The Oxford Handbook of Latin American History\, an edited volume on Latin American historiography; and Immigration Culture and Socioeconomic Development in the United States\, Canada\, and Latin America (2018). \n\nMi.\, 22. SUMMARY:LBI NY | Berlin: Book Club: Family Declassified with the author Katherine Fennelly
DESCRIPTION:About Family Declassified: Uncovering My Grandfather’s Journey from Spy to Children’s Book Author \nWhy do people keep deep secrets about their lives and ancestry? In Family Declassified\, Katherine Fennelly applies her expertise as a social science researcher to answer this question regarding her maternal grandfather\, a Jewish Hungarian immigrant who arrived in the US one hundred years ago. A Google search for ‘Francis Kalnay’ yields more than 54\,000 results—the vast majority related to the children’s book\, Chucaro: Wild Pony of the Pampa\, for which he won a Newbery Honor in 1959. Buried deep within the search results are a few references to his years at the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—the precursor to the CIA. However\, none describes how a foreign-born sailor overcame a childhood marked by tragedy and became the head of an elite espionage unit for the Allied Forces during World War II. At the OSS Kalnay was one of the few foreign-born Americans informed and ‘indoctrinated’ in what we now know as the ULTRA decrypts\, the German Enigma messages that were used to capture or thwart almost all German offensive intelligence activity during the Second World War. \nIt took several years of reviewing previously unexamined government records and conducting personal interviews and genealogical searches to piece together the life of a man who hid his Jewish identity\, the nature of his work as a spy\, and the murder of his sister and nephew by Hungarian Nazis. The result is a manuscript that examines the nature of family myths and presents the gripping story of a man whose life was shaped by some of the most extraordinary events of the 20th century. (Amazon) \nOur Guest and the Author: Katherine Fennelly \n \n\n\nTrained as a social scientist\, Katherine Fennelly is an immigration policy expert whose work has taken her to many of the countries where her late grandfather lived out his adventures. She has studied and worked in Iran\, Spain\, and Ecuador and done consulting work and academic residencies across Latin America and Europe. Katherine is a voracious reader and a life-long student of languages. She discovered her family’s Jewish roots as an adult\, something her Hungarian-American mother preferred not to discuss. When not tracking down classified documents and delving into family history\, she volunteers for refugee service organizations\, serves as a Spanish-English interpreter\, and enjoys biking in Prospect Park and spending time with her daughters and granddaughters who live nearby in Brooklyn. \n\n\nFinding the Book: \nKatherine Fennelly on her website has a number of sources for procuring the book. We have copied the links and present them here: \nCommunity Bookstore in Brooklyn \nAmazon\, both in print and for Kindle \nDirectly from the publisher \nThe Book Group Special on Fennelly’s website \nPlease note that the Book Group Special is done directly through Katherine….the LBI will not be organizing the procuring and distributing of books. But if you have other friends interested\, this might be a good option. \n\nTuesday\, 28th Jan. 2025 \n20:00–21:30 MEZ \nFormat: Online. \nAdmission is free\, to get your ticket\, click ↗ here.

SUMMARY:LBI Jerusalem: Book Launch: The Policy of Persecution And Jewish Life in Nazi Germany: A Selection of Documents 1933-1945
DESCRIPTION:This book offers Hebrew readers a rich selection of documents on the lives of Jews in Nazi Germany\, spanning from the rise of the Nazi regime to the outbreak of World War II. The first section\, The German Reich 1933–1937\, is based on the first volume of the German series Die Verfolgung und Ermordung der europäischen Juden durch das nationalsozialistische Deutschland 1933–1945 (VEJ). \nArranged chronologically\, the documents present diverse perspectives on the events: those of Jews living under the Nazi regime in Germany\, non-Jewish German society\, Jews outside Germany\, and international actors. They offer direct insights into the processes of disenfranchisement and exclusion of Jews from German society\, as well as the ways in which Jewish individuals and communities coped with the resulting dispossession and social isolation in daily life. \n  \nEdited by: Prof. Guy Miron and Dr. Susanne Heim \nOn behalf of the International Institute for Holocaust Research at Yad Vashem \n  \nChair: Dr. Sharon Livne \nGreetings: Dr. Iael Nidam-Orvieto (Yad Vashem) \nOpening remarks: Dr. Susanne Heim (Freiburg University) \nSpeakers: Prof. Tamar Hermann (Open University)\, Prof. Michal Ben Hurin (Bar Ilan university)\, Prof. Guy Miron (Open University) \n  \nJanuary 29th\, 2024 \n19:00 \nLeo Baeck Institute Jerusalem \n  \n  \nThe event will take place at the institute. SUMMARY:LBI NY | Berlin: Book Talk: Saints and Liars by Debórah Dwork.
DESCRIPTION:Marion Kaplan will join Debórah Dwork to discuss her new book\, Saints and Liars. \n  \n\n\nSaints and Liars is a moving history of American relief workers during the Hitler years who sought to save Jews and political opponents targeted by the Nazi regime. Praised by Publishers’ Weekly as “a gripping study of individuals’ operations in terrible extremis\,” and selected by Apple Books as a Winter’s Most Anticipated Book\, the story historian Debórah Dwork tells arcs through time\, place\, and situation. From negotiating with government representatives to doing direct (and sometimes secret) refugee relief\, aid workers contended with moral questions and fast-changing historical circumstances in their mission to bring people to safety. Drawing on rich archival sources\, Saints and Liars offers a glimpse into the lives of people who risked all to help those fleeing persecution. \nAuthor Debórah Dwork\, director of the Center for the Study of the Holocaust\, Genocide\, and Crimes Against Humanity at the Graduate Center – CUNY\, will discuss her book with Marion Kaplan\, Skirball Professor Emerita of Modern Jewish History\, NYU. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDebórah Dwork is the Director of the Center for the Study of the Holocaust\, Genocide\, and Crimes Against Humanity at the Graduate Center – CUNY. Her most recent (January 2025) work\, Saints and Liars: The Story of Americans Who Saved Refugees from the Nazis\, was selected by Apple Books as a Winter’s Most Anticipated Book. Dwork is also a leading authority on university education in this field: she envisioned and actualized the first doctoral program anywhere in the world specifically in Holocaust History and Genocide Studies. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarion Kaplan is the Skirball Professor of Modern Jewish History at New York University. She is a three-time winner of the National Jewish Book Award for her books: The Making of the Jewish Middle Class: Women\, Family and Identity in Imperial Germany (New York\, Oxford University Press\, 1991); Between Dignity and Despair: Jewish Life in Nazi Germany (Oxford University Press\, 1998); and Gender and Jewish History\, co-edited with Deborah Dash Moore (Indiana\, 2011).
